What To Do If Your Dishwasher Isn't Effectively Washing

Posted on: 21 December 2019

Your dishwasher is designed to make your life more convenient by cleaning your dishes for you instead of you having to clean them by hand. But all of that convenience goes out the window the moment your dishwasher stops working properly. If you are not sure what is going on with your dishwasher, here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the problem.

First, Make Sure You Are Using It Correctly

Yes, even dishwashers can fail to work properly due to "user error." The most common mistake people make is overloading their dishwasher with far too many dishes and utensils. There should be a bit of space between each dish on the rack or otherwise the water is not going to be able to get in between them to clean effectively. Make sure everything is loaded securely as well so there are no obstructions to the spray arm as it enters the wash cycle.

Clean the Gasket and Check the Hoses If You Have a Leak

If your dishes are technically getting clean but your dishwasher is leaking water during operation, there are a couple different things you can check. First check the hose that runs the water to and from the dishwasher. It's possible for food residue to create a clog over time. Install a new hose or have a dishwasher repair service install it for you. Another way water could leak is if your dishwasher door is not sealing all the way when closed. The gasket around the door can get food residue or gunk on it and this affects the seal. Clean and wipe down the gasket to allow the door to close tightly.

Give Your Dishwasher a Deep Cleaning

If your dishwasher is technically operating correctly but your dishes and glasses are not coming out clean or are coming out with residue, you likely need to clean the dishwasher itself. You'll need to remove the spray arm and remove any clogs you find. As you begin to take your dishwasher's components apart, you should also check for any residue or scale build up. Dousing components like the spray arm in white vinegar is a good way to get it clean again.
