Why Your Refrigerator Is Running Constantly Or Leaking Water

Refrigerators are in our homes day and night. In fact, most people use them daily to keep food fresh and cool. When it works properly, we don't think much about it.

However, with all of the moving parts, it's common for problems to occur with the unit. When this happens, knowing what the possible problems could be can help you decide if you need the services of a professional.

The Refrigerator is Running Constantly

Your refrigerator could constantly be running because of a few different reasons.

1. The compressor is cycling off and on because there is too much heat in the refrigerator. This could be caused by the door being left open too long, or the air filter needing to be replaced.

2. The defrost timer is not working properly and has failed to shut off the compressor, causing it to cycle continuously. If this is the case, you will need to replace the defrost timer.

3. The condenser coils are dirty and can cause the unit to overheat, making it necessary for it to run more often than normal so that enough cold air can be generated. To fix this problem, clean out all of the dust from around these coils, then keep your refrigerator empty until it is cool again (this may take several hours).

Water is Leaking From the Refrigerator

If your refrigerator is leaking water, you need to find out where the leak is coming from and fix it immediately.

Aside from being an eyesore, a leaking refrigerator can cause damage to your home due to mold and mildew growth. There are a few reasons why your refrigerator may be leaking water.

  1. The drip pan under your refrigerator has holes or rips in it. The drip pan is usually located under the bottom of your refrigerator and catches any spills or drips that happen while you're cooking or storing food in your refrigerator. If this pan becomes damaged, water will leak out onto the floor instead of going into the drip pan where it belongs.

  2. There are leaks between the door and the door seal on your refrigerator. This is another common problem that occurs with refrigerators because of faulty seals between the doors and seals on top of them. If there are cracks or gaps between these two parts of your refrigerator, then there's no telling how much water could potentially leak out.

It can be tricky to fix a refrigerator because it involves working with electricity and moving parts that make up the inner workings of your fridge. If you are uncomfortable, call a professional to make sure your repair is completed safely.
